Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has stirred debate with a sharp critique of former Anambra State governor and politician Peter Obi, questioning his leadership qualities and connection to Igbo cultural values.

In a statement, Edochie argued that Obi does not embody the true spirit of Ndi Igbo, which he described as “onye aghana nwanne ya” — meaning “do not leave your brother behind.” According to Edochie, genuine leadership is measured by the ability to uplift others while rising to success.

He claimed that despite Obi’s years in politics and business, no one can point to personal success directly linked to Obi’s mentorship or support. Edochie contrasted this with Nollywood, where he said several actors openly acknowledge him as a key influence in their careers.

“Not one person can say that about Peter Obi,” Edochie stated, questioning whether Obi’s approach reflects selfishness rather than leadership. He further asked: “What are you doing with the power God has given you? If you can’t lift people around you out of poverty, you simply can’t lift Nigeria out of poverty.”

Edochie’s comments have sparked mixed reactions online, with some agreeing that leaders should be judged by how many lives they positively impact, while others defended Obi’s record in governance and business.

The remarks highlight ongoing debates about the nature of leadership in Nigeria, particularly the balance between personal success and collective empowerment.
