The Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) has announced plans to begin charging motorists for street parking starting in 2026, as part of a broader initiative to tackle traffic congestion and restore order to the city’s roads.

According to officials, the scheme will introduce regulated parking zones across major streets, with motorists required to pay fees through designated channels. The policy is expected to reduce indiscriminate parking, ease gridlock, and improve traffic flow in Nigeria’s busiest metropolis.

Beyond traffic management, LASPA emphasized that the program will also create new jobs for residents, including roles in enforcement, monitoring, and customer service. The revenue generated will be reinvested into urban infrastructure and road maintenance.

While some Lagosians welcome the move as a step toward modernizing the city’s transport system, others have expressed concern about affordability and the risk of over‑enforcement.
