The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday sentenced Boko Haram member Alkali Yarima, also known as La’ari, to death by hanging for his role in the 2015 attacks on Maiduguri.

Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the ruling after finding Yarima guilty of participating in the deadly assault carried out by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State. The conviction is one of the rare instances where a member of the extremist group has faced capital punishment through Nigeria’s judicial process.

Boko Haram, responsible for widespread violence, mass killings, and kidnappings across Nigeria’s northeast, has left thousands dead and displaced millions since its insurgency began in 2009. The sentencing of Yarima is seen as part of ongoing efforts to hold perpetrators accountable and reinforce the rule of law in the fight against terrorism.
