Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has approved an indefinite ban on graduation ceremonies in kindergarten, primary and secondary schools across the state. The state Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, announced the measure, saying it is aimed at reducing the financial burden on parents.

The directive builds on an earlier stance Soludo took in October 2025, when he told a campaign rally in Awka North that such ceremonies — often requiring parents to pay for gowns and uniforms for children merely moving up a class — were unnecessary and exploitative. He had also barred Christmas parties in schools on similar grounds at the time, and warned that non-compliant schools would be sealed.

Soludo's administration has framed the moves as part of a broader push to make education more affordable and equitable, alongside other measures such as discontinuing single-use workbooks so books can be passed down between siblings. Anambra joins states like Ondo and Edo, which have introduced similar bans on nursery and primary school graduation ceremonies in recent months.
