The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reaffirmed the sack of Ifeanyi Ejiofor, former lead counsel to detained leader Nnamdi Kanu, dismissing his claim of reinstatement. IPOB spokesman Emma Powerful said the move to reappoint Ejiofor came from a faction expelled from the organization and is "dead on arrival."

The dispute traces back to a letter Kanu wrote from the Sokoto Correctional Centre on July 22, formally withdrawing Ejiofor's authority to represent him, his family, or IPOB in any capacity. Kanu said the letter simply put in writing a dismissal already communicated verbally, citing IPOB's Code of Conduct as giving him sole power to appoint or remove principal officers. He directed Ejiofor to stop presenting himself as counsel for him or the group, and warned that confidential information from his years of representation remains legally protected.

Ejiofor pushed back, claiming a separate letter from IPOB leadership had reinstated him, and alleging Kanu had been making threats against him even from detention. IPOB rejected both claims, accusing Ejiofor of sabotage — pointing to an episode where he appeared in court alone after Kanu boycotted proceedings, and a later visit to the Department of State Services to persuade Kanu to resume attending, which the group said amounted to compromising his client's position. IPOB also dismissed Ejiofor's argument that Kanu's original dismissal letter was unauthenticated, saying it had been properly notarized by a lawyer in Sokoto.
