Abia State First Lady Mrs. Priscilla Otti has reaffirmed her commitment to the welfare of widows, declaring that no widow in the state should be subjected to oppression, injustice, poverty or homelessness after the loss of a spouse. The pledge is consistent with a running theme across her office's work this year, including the "Dignity Homes" initiative, which has so far provided fully furnished houses to dozens of indigent widows across all 17 local government areas of the state, alongside individual interventions such as a furnished home given to a widow in Umuahia earlier this year after her office learned of her deteriorating living conditions.

Speaking through her Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Maureen Ahukwa, at past handover events, Mrs. Otti has said such gestures reflect a "tangible expression" of her office's efforts to empower women and support vulnerable groups in the state, describing the housing project as "a deliberate effort to restore dignity to widows who had lost hope."

Her office says plans are underway to introduce economic empowerment programmes for indigent women to help beneficiaries become more financially independent, in addition to continued housing support.
